Forget London, Paris and Rome, here are some of the weirdest countries to go on vacation, travelling to another country and meeting there with your neighbour on the fifth floor, the local tobacconist and what is worse, your boss! For this summer, we have selected a decalogue of countries, say, different. And not necessarily more expensive!
Sweden.
Well, actually, we are talking about the Stockholm archipelago, with about 30,000 islands. You will exercise (you will be able to move from one island to another in a kayak) and you will see what a “Nordic” party is (in summer, festivals are organized in some of the islands).
Mongolia.
If you are thinking of going, run, European travel agencies are starting to promote it. In fact, the most interesting (and economical) thing is to go it alone, avoiding organized plans. Mongolia has a fascinating history, and some very hospitable nomadic peoples, who will not hesitate to make you participate in their life with the animals? and its curious culinary customs.
Macedonia.
It is a small country and possibly the most unknown in the former Yugoslavia. Its capital is called Skopje and compared to the typical European tourist cities it is much cheaper. Half the price, approximately. The people there, as in rural areas in Croatia or Slovenia, for example, are reasonably hospitable. For about 10 euros you can find accommodation in someone’s house, and for another 5 or 10 euros, they will feed you. The hardest part is getting there: planes are expensive and trains are slow and unpunctual. The best option is to fly to Sofia, 200 km away, and there take a bus (10-20 euros) or rent a car.
Greenland
Because in summer not everything has to be beach and heat, and because whoever has gone says they will not forget the experience. Of course, perhaps, in this case, it is convenient to go hand in hand with a travel agency. Greenland Adventure is one of them.
Russia.
If you go on your own, keep in mind that Russia is a country where it is convenient to have the itinerary planned in advance, for a matter of money (the hotels you will find will not be cheap) and because some train journeys between cities such as Moscow and Saint Petersburg, for example, they require that the reservation be made up to 45 days in advance. The process to obtain the tourist visa is also quite cumbersome (try to have a couple of months of the term, just in case) and costs about 100 euros.
